SEO Crawler

See your website the way Google and ChatGPT see it.

Screaming Frog is one of the tools I love. Most business owners will never open it. So I built a free SEO crawler they will actually use: up to 500 URLs, 30+ checks, an AI Visibility Readiness score, and your top fixes in plain English. No download and no sign-up.

Quick answer

What Is An SEO Crawler?

An SEO crawler is a tool that visits every page of a website by following its links, the same way a search engine bot does, and reports the technical problems it finds. It shows which pages are broken, redirected, blocked, duplicated, or missing key tags, so you can fix what stops Google and AI search from reading your site.

Enter a domain above and this SEO crawler reads your robots.txt file and XML sitemaps, then follows your internal links page by page. In a minute or two you get a site health score out of 100, your top three fixes, and a full list of errors, warnings, and notices, each with plain English instructions. Every table can be filtered and sorted on screen, and the full list comes free in the PDF report.

Crawlability

Can Search Engines Reach It?

The SEO crawler checks status codes, broken links, redirect chains, robots.txt blocks, and pages buried too deep in your site.

Indexability

Can It Be Indexed?

Noindex tags, canonical tags, and sitemap URLs that should not be there.

On-page

Is Each Page Clear?

Titles, meta descriptions, H1 headings, word count, image alt text, and structured data.

AI access

Can AI Answers Use It?

Whether your robots.txt lets ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google, and Bing crawlers in.

Why I built it

An SEO Crawler Every Business Owner Can Run In One Click

Screaming Frog’s free SEO Spider is a desktop download for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and the free version is restricted to crawling up to 500 URLs in a single crawl. For an SEO specialist on a big site, that desktop power is worth it.

Most business owners I work with never get that far. They need to know what is broken, what it costs them, and what to fix first, on whatever device they are holding. So I built an SEO crawler that runs in the browser, matches that 500 URL limit, ranks the fixes for you, and adds the AI crawler checks that now matter for SEO, AEO, and GEO.

500

URLs Per Crawl

The same ceiling as the free desktop SEO crawler most specialists start with, in a browser tab.

10

Crawlers Checked

Google, Bing, and the main AI search, assistant, and training crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, and Google.

3

Fixes First

Every SEO crawler run ends with the three fixes that matter most, ranked by severity and how many pages they affect.

What it checks

30+ Checks In Every SEO Crawl

Every issue this SEO crawler finds is graded as an error, a warning, or a notice. Errors stop search engines reading pages. Warnings hold rankings back. Notices are worth a look to confirm they are intentional.

Length checks follow how search results display. Google says there is no limit on how long a meta description can be, but snippets are cut to fit the screen, so this SEO crawler flags descriptions over 160 characters as a notice and titles over 600 pixels as a warning.

Status And Links

  • 4xx and 5xx errors
  • Internal links to broken pages
  • Internal links to redirects
  • Redirect chains and loops
  • Pages that fail to load
  • Links with no anchor text

Titles And Meta

  • Missing or duplicate titles
  • Titles over 600 pixels
  • Short titles
  • Missing or duplicate meta descriptions
  • Long meta descriptions
  • Pages with two title tags

Content And Headings

  • Missing H1 headings
  • More than one H1
  • Low word count pages
  • Images missing alt text
  • No structured data
  • Missing language attribute

Indexing

  • Noindex pages
  • Canonicalised pages
  • Missing canonical tags
  • Non-indexable URLs in the sitemap
  • URLs blocked by robots.txt
  • Orphan pages

Site Setup

  • Missing robots.txt
  • Missing XML sitemap
  • Missing mobile viewport tag
  • Links to insecure http:// pages
  • Pages four or more clicks deep
  • Slow responses and large HTML

AI And Search Access

  • Googlebot and Bingbot blocked
  • OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User
  • Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User
  • PerplexityBot
  • GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended

How it works

How This SEO Crawler Works

This SEO crawler follows the same order a well-behaved search engine bot does. It reads your rules first, finds every URL you have told search engines about, then walks your internal links and checks each page as it goes.

SEO crawler diagram showing robots.txt, XML sitemap, and internal links feeding 30+ checks and a ranked list of fixes

Step 1

Read robots.txt

The SEO crawler loads your robots.txt, notes every rule, and checks what ten search and AI crawlers are allowed to reach.

Step 2

Load Your Sitemaps

It reads your XML sitemaps, including sitemap index files, so pages that nothing links to still get checked.

Step 3

Follow Internal Links

Starting at your home page, it follows every internal link, records each status code, and parses titles, headings, and tags.

Step 4

Rank The Fixes

Every issue is weighed by severity and by how many pages it touches, so the fixes that matter most rise to the top.

What Does An SEO Crawler Do?

An SEO crawler starts at your home page, downloads it, records everything a search engine would read, then follows each internal link to the next page and repeats. It builds a map of your site from the inside, so it finds problems you cannot see by browsing, such as a page that redirects twice, a blog post nobody links to, or a template that adds two title tags.

This SEO crawler also reads your robots.txt file first, the same way well-behaved bots do, and adds the URLs listed in your XML sitemap. Comparing the two is how it finds orphan pages: pages your sitemap tells Google about but your own site never links to.

Is There A Free Alternative To Screaming Frog?

Yes. This free SEO crawler covers the checks most audits start with, up to 500 URLs, with nothing to install. It suits quick audits, sites built on WordPress, Shopify, Wix, and Squarespace, and checking a site from a phone or a client’s laptop.

A desktop crawler is still the stronger choice for sites with thousands of pages, JavaScript rendering, and custom extraction. I use both: this SEO crawler for the fast first pass, and a desktop crawler when a project calls for depth.

Job Use this SEO crawler Use a desktop crawler
Quick health check Yes, one click in a browser Yes, after install
Sites up to 500 URLs Yes Yes
Ranked fixes in plain English Yes Manual review

Why AI Crawler Access Matters Now

Search now happens in AI answers as well as blue links, and each AI platform sends its own crawlers. One line in robots.txt can quietly remove a site from ChatGPT or Perplexity answers while Google rankings look fine. That is why this SEO crawler checks ten search and AI crawlers on every run.

Search And Answer Crawlers

OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT search, and sites that opt out will not appear in those answers. Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce your visibility in Claude’s search results. Perplexity says PerplexityBot shows and links websites in its search results. Block these and AI answers have less reason to mention you.

Training Crawlers

GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended collect content that may be used to train AI models. Blocking them is a business choice. Google states that Google-Extended does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search, so this SEO crawler flags those blocks as notices.

What Is An AI Visibility Readiness Score?

The AI Visibility Readiness score rates how easy your site is for AI answers to reach, understand, and credit, out of 100. This SEO crawler scores it alongside site health because a site can be technically clean and still be hard for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google’s AI features to use.

It checks eight signals across every page crawled: whether AI search and assistant crawlers are allowed, brand entity schema on your home page, structured data coverage, question-style headings, author and date signals, Open Graph previews, and an optional llms.txt file. No tool can see how AI systems rank sources, so treat this as a readiness check, not a promise of citations.

Open Graph previews for shared links, and an llms.txt guide to your key pages.

Use it like a pro

How To Run A Technical SEO Audit In 5 Steps

  1. Crawl The Whole Site

Enter your domain, set the limit to cover every page, and keep robots.txt and sitemap URLs switched on.

  2. Fix Errors First

Broken pages, server errors, and blocked search engines stop crawling completely. Clear these before anything else.

  3. Clean Up Redirects And Links

Point internal links straight at live pages, and collapse any redirect chain into a single hop.

  4. Tidy Titles, Descriptions, And Headings

Give every indexable page a unique title, a clear meta description, and one H1 that matches the topic.

  5. Check AI Access, Then Re-Crawl

Confirm the AI search crawlers you want are allowed, then run the SEO crawler again to prove the fixes landed.

How Do I Find Broken Links On My Website?

Run this SEO crawler on your domain and open the Issues tab. “Internal links to broken pages” lists every page that links to a 404 or other error, with the broken URL next to it, so you know exactly which link to edit. “Pages returning 4xx errors” shows the broken pages themselves and how many pages link to each one.

Fix the links on the pages listed, or 301 redirect the dead URL to the closest live page. Then run the SEO crawler again. Email yourself the free PDF report if you need to hand the list to a developer.

How Often Should You Run An SEO Crawler?

Run an SEO crawler at least once a month, and every time your site changes in a big way: a redesign, a new theme or plugin, a migration, or a batch of new pages. Monthly crawls catch broken links and redirect chains while they are still small, before they pile up across hundreds of pages.

After each fix, crawl again. A second SEO crawler run is the fastest way to prove a change landed, and the site health score gives you a simple number to track over time.

Can An SEO Crawler Check Any Website?

This SEO crawler can check any public website, including a competitor’s, as long as the site answers normal requests. It only reads what any visitor could see, and it respects robots.txt by default.

Some sites block automated visits with a firewall, a security plugin, or a bot check. When that happens the SEO crawler reports the pages it could not fetch, which is itself a useful finding: if a crawler cannot reach a page, search engines and AI crawlers may struggle too.

What Is A Good Site Health Score?

A site health score of 90 or more means the crawl found few problems for the size of the site. From 75 to 89 the site is in good shape with fixes to make, from 50 to 74 it needs work, and under 50 something is likely stopping search engines from reading important pages.

The score weighs errors most, then warnings, then notices, and scales each issue by how many of your crawled pages it affects. It measures technical health only. Content quality, links from other sites, and search demand matter just as much for rankings, so treat the score as your technical baseline.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About This SEO Crawler

Is This SEO Crawler Really Free?

Yes. The SEO crawler and every result on screen are free with no sign-up. The full PDF report, with every URL, issue, and fix, is free too: fill in a short form under your results and it is emailed to your business inbox.

Can I Track My Progress Between Crawls?

Yes. Your browser remembers your last SEO crawler result for each website, so the next crawl shows how your site health and AI readiness scores changed, how many issues you fixed, and anything new. Nothing is stored on our side.

How Many Pages Can I Crawl?

The SEO crawler checks up to 500 URLs per crawl. Start with 100 for a quick check, then raise the limit to cover the whole site. Redirects and blocked URLs count towards the limit.

Does The SEO Crawler Run JavaScript?

No. The SEO crawler reads the HTML your server sends before any JavaScript runs. Sites that build their content with JavaScript may show fewer words and links here than visitors see.

Will An SEO Crawler Slow Down My Website?

Unlikely. Normal speed requests up to 12 pages at a time in short bursts, and Gentle drops that to 4. Choose Gentle for small hosting plans or sites behind a strict firewall.

Why Were Some Pages Not Fetched?

Requests come from Google’s cloud servers, and some firewalls and security plugins block automated visits. If many pages fail, try Gentle speed, or allow the crawl in your security settings.

Is My Data Stored?

SEO crawler results live only in your browser tab. Page responses are cached for up to 10 minutes to keep repeat crawls fast, then discarded. Your details are stored only if you ask for the PDF report.
